How it Works

Valuation

 

 

 

The first step is to obtain a free valuation from one of our specialists. You can go about this by bringing the item(s) to our saleroom between 10:00-12:00 every week day, by visiting our regional Monday drop-in valuation sessions, sending images to our valuations email address valuations@davidlay.co.uk or if you have a large number of items, we can send a valuer to you. Consignment

 

Once you have decided to sell your items with us, you will consign them to one of our specialist sales: Fine Art, Antiques and Jewellery, Books & Collectors’ Items, or for lower value lots, to our Household & General sale.  We do not have an in-house carrier, but recommend a number of local firms.  The cost for this can be deducted from your proceeds post sale.

 

Commission and Charges

 

 

In our Antiques and Fine Art sales, commission is 10% plus VAT on that commission, equalling 12% in all.  For our Books & Collectors sales and The Household & General sales, commission is 15% plus VAT, equalling approximately 18%.  For specialist sales we also charge an internet image fee of £2 in order that your items can be displayed on the-saleroom.com, along with 1% insurance so that we can keep your items safe. If we choose to illustrate your lot in the paper catalogue, there is a further charge of £8.

 

Pre-Sale

 

Before the sale, we will set a mutually agreeable estimate along with, if necessary, deciding a reserve just under the low estimate.  The catalogue for the sale will be online just over a week before the sale, and we will send you a paper copy in the post, together with a list of the estimates for all of your lots.

Post-Sale

 

After the sale, you are welcome to ring up to ascertain the hammer price made by each of your lots.  In the likely event that your items sold, we will transfer the proceeds directly into your account up to twenty working days after the auction, which leaves time for our buyers to pay.  You can also specify to receive a cheque.  If any items did not sell, we will contact you to ask whether you would like to re-enter them with a reduced reserve, or whether you would like to collect them.
